“St Nicholas?!” Scott stared at the message before looking around at his assembled officers.

“Guv, St Nicholas, aka the Wonderworker, and Santa Claus. Known as the miracle worker too,” an officer said.

Scott gritted his teeth the more he thought about it. The sarcasm Cara’s abductor displayed infuriated him further. He was taunting Scott. Only a miracle from St Nicholas could save Cara.

“Rest in peace…” Abby mumbled whilst searching Google on her phone. “All the locations so far have been within five minutes of each other. Station to Pavilion. Pavilion to Seven Dials. There’s a St Nicholas Church less than five minutes from here… coincidence?” Abby asked, turning to Scott.

Scott shrugged. The vagueness of the clues could be interpreted in many ways, but with little to go on, Scott bought into Abby’s line of thinking. “Mike, can you head back to the office and liaise with Matt. He’s getting the voice recordings analysed. We need to analyse this video feed and the phones as a priority. Anything around IP links, locations and those kinds of things?”

Mike nodded and shot off towards his car.

A few minutes later, Abby pulled up outside St Nicholas Church and exited the car alongside Scott. He crossed his arms and let out a deep sigh. The poignancy of the location wasn’t lost on him.

“It’s another graveyard!” Scott said. It was late afternoon with the sun dipping down behind the clouds. The eerie shadows cast by tombstones across the overgrown grass added to the gloom that surrounded him. “Where are we supposed to look?”

“It’s too big an area for us and a handful of officers. I’m going to draft in extra resources. In the meantime, we can at least start our search.” Abby instructed officers to form a line along one boundary wall, keeping the space between them to only a few feet. They shuffled along, scanning the ground and treading through the long grass. It felt like a fruitless exercise in her mind, but until extra resources arrived, they had to push on.

The frustration was palpable amongst the officers. Several of them kicked the grass with their feet as they wove their way through the gravestones. With darkness not far away, many of the officers had resorted to using torches they had retrieved from the cars to help them in their search.

Thirty minutes later, two personnel carriers and a dog unit arrived. As news spread amongst CID, some off-duty officers turned up to help knowing how much this meant to all of them. Abby deployed them in the search, allowing them to cover a much greater area. The search continued with pace as darkness crept in. Abby saw the panic in Scott’s eyes as he teetered on the edge. His voice fluctuated in pitch and volume every time he spoke, and he kept clenching and unclenching his fists. Time wasn’t on their side, and she knew it. They all knew it.

“Please tell me someone has got something?” Abby shouted to no one in particular. Muted responses told her all she needed to know.
